The RRB Nursing Superintendent exam pattern and syllabus is simpler than many central nursing exams: a single computer-based test of 100 questions, followed by document verification and a medical examination. The paper is dominated by professional nursing questions, but the general sections and one-third negative marking often decide the final merit. This guide explains the current CBT pattern as per the Railway Recruitment Boards’ paramedical categories CEN, the full syllabus, previous paper trends and how to use them.
RRB Nursing Superintendent exam pattern and syllabus: the CBT
Nursing Superintendent is recruited by the RRBs under the Centralised Employment Notice (CEN) for Paramedical Categories. The pattern below is as per the recent CENs, including CEN 03/2025 and CEN 05/2026 (notified in September 2026). Always confirm in the CEN of your cycle, available on the official RRB regional websites such as rrbcdg.gov.in.
| Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Professional ability (nursing) | 70 | 70 |
| General awareness | 10 | 10 |
| General arithmetic, general intelligence and reasoning | 10 | 10 |
| General science | 10 | 10 |
| Total | 100 | 100 |
Key rules of the CBT
- Mode: computer-based test, objective multiple choice.
- Duration: 90 minutes (120 minutes for eligible PwBD candidates using a scribe).
- Negative marking: one-third of the marks allotted to a question is deducted for each wrong answer.
- No sectional timing: you can move between sections freely within the 90 minutes.
- Minimum qualifying marks: as per RRB rules, UR and EWS 40 percent, OBC (non-creamy layer) and SC 30 percent, ST 25 percent. A relaxation of up to 2 percent may be given to PwBD candidates if enough candidates are not available.
- Normalisation: if the CBT is held in multiple shifts, RRBs normalise the marks as per the method described in the CEN.
Negative marking: a quick calculation
If you attempt 90 questions and get 75 right and 15 wrong, your score is 75 minus 5, which is 70. Every three wrong answers wipe out one correct answer. With only 90 minutes and no sectional limit, smart selection of questions matters more than attempting everything.
Section-wise approach inside 90 minutes
Since there is no sectional timer, plan a split before the exam and practise it in mocks. A common approach is to give about 55 to 60 minutes to the 70 professional questions, about 20 minutes to the 30 general questions, and keep the last 10 minutes for marked questions. Adjust the split to your strengths, but never leave the general sections for the final few minutes.
RRB CBT compared with AIIMS NORCET
| Feature | RRB Nursing Superintendent | AIIMS NORCET (2026 cycles) |
|---|---|---|
| Stages | One CBT | Two CBTs (Prelims and Mains) |
| Questions | 100 in 90 minutes | 100 in Prelims, 160 in Mains |
| Non-nursing share | 30 questions | 20 questions in Prelims |
| Sectional timing | No | Yes |
| Negative marking | One-third | One-third |
See the NORCET exam pattern and syllabus if you are preparing for both exams.
Selection process
- Single stage CBT: merit is prepared on the basis of normalised CBT marks.
- Document verification (DV): candidates are called in numbers broadly equal to the vacancies, based on merit and the options they chose.
- Medical examination: as per the medical standard prescribed for the post.
- Empanelment: final panel based on CBT merit, successful DV and medical fitness.
There is no interview or skill test for Nursing Superintendent. Nursing Superintendent is placed in Pay Level 7 of the 7th CPC pay matrix, with an initial pay of Rs 44,900 as per the CEN.

General science (10 questions)
Physics, chemistry and life sciences at about the class 10 level. Nursing students usually score well in life sciences; physics and chemistry basics need a quick revision.
Previous papers 2021 to 2025: trends
RRBs do not publish subject-wise weightage. The observations below are qualitative, based on candidates’ recall of recent paramedical CBTs, including the CBT for CEN 03/2025 held in March 2026.
- Direct, fact-based questions dominate. Compared with AIIMS NORCET, RRB professional questions are shorter and more one-liner style: definitions, normal values, drug actions, procedures and programme facts.
- Medical-surgical nursing and nursing foundations form the largest share of professional questions, followed by OBG, community health and pediatrics.
- Less common subjects appear regularly. Biochemistry, sociology, psychology and pathology are in the CEN syllabus and questions from them do appear, so do not skip them.
- Some clinical application questions (first action, best position, priority) have been reported, but they are fewer than in NORCET.
- The general sections are of moderate difficulty and are where many nursing candidates lose easy marks through lack of practice.
How to use previous year papers
- Solve recall papers of past paramedical CBTs to learn the question style and the depth of each subject.
- Make a list of repeated concepts (for example, normal values, vaccine schedule, sterilisation methods) and revise it weekly.
- Practise full papers in 90 minutes without sectional breaks, since you must choose your own section order.
- Verify answers of recall papers from standard textbooks, as unofficial keys can be wrong.
- Combine PYQs with mock tests in the exact pattern from the RRB test series.
Next steps
Once you know the pattern, the next step is a realistic plan that gives daily time to both nursing and the general sections. Plan your study with our RRB Nursing Superintendent preparation strategy and track dates on the RRB Nursing Superintendent notification 2026 page. For subject revision, use our fundamentals of nursing notes, medical-surgical nursing notes, microbiology nursing notes and community health nursing notes.
