Indian Railways, one of the world's major train networks, employs a vast number of individuals in a variety of cadres. Indian Railways is organized into zones, which are further separated into divisions. Competitive tests are used to fill technical and non-technical positions in certain zones and divisions. While non-technical departments include general services such as accounts, personnel management, the Railway Protection Force (RPF), or security and traffic services, among others, technical departments include civil, technical, and mechanical engineering, signalling and telecom, and a variety of others dealing with related disciplines. Each department has staff at various levels. Group A officers are ranked highest, while Group D personnel are ranked lowest.
